Guidance Services
Counseling

The Department of Counseling Services exists to help the student make decisions. The concerns may be in the areas of home, school friends, future education, and work. Students may make an appointment to see the counselor of their choice. This may be done before school, during lunch, study halls, or after school for the next day. The student should not take time from an academic class for an appointment unless it is an emergency. Making an appointment insures that the counselor will be available to spend a reasonable amount of time with the student. Appointments may be made directly with Mrs. Gacka, Counseling Services Secretary.

Counseling Services has its own career information center: college catalogues, vocational and technical school information, pamphlets, videos, and audiotapes on a wide variety of topics are available. Career prep/development is addressed by each counselor in their corresponding grade level.

Counselor referrals are appropriate when major emergencies (physical/sexual abuse, suicidal ideation/gestures, chemical dependency issues, etc.) occur with parents and students. Counselors can access community agencies and coordinates services with the school. A Student Assistance Program (S.A.P.) referral, as well as appointments, may also be made through the counselor.

Because of the variety of services provided by the Department, it is necessary to assign specific responsibilities to each department member. Carefully read the following descriptions and help students to select the counselor best able to help them.
